Spirits of the Marsh brings together four artists working across sculpture, drawing, painting, and ceramics to explore the layered identity of Romney Marsh in the 21st century.
With its vast open skies, maze of ditches and quiet rural villages, Romney Marsh is a land apart. Shaped centuries ago by human intervention and the sea, its ecology, hydrology and heritage are now being threatened by commercial and climate pressures of the modern age.
In a time of uncertainty for this distinct landscape, Spirits of the Marsh invites visitors to reflect on what is at stake for a place defined by both resilience and vulnerability. Through natural material and imagery, the work will trace the unseen forces that are shifting memories, myths and moods. It will offer a space of reflection and attentiveness, where the boundaries between past and future, natural and human, real and imagined remain fluid.
